 DennisOl: Hi, Vance.

VanceS 's avatar lands in a sprawl

 VanceS: Whew, hey Dennis

DennisOl: Claire was telling me about a big grant project.

 VanceS: pass it on

 DennisOl: Mandenos mas, Claire!

 VanceS: si por favor

 ClaireB hugs vance's avatar

ClaireB: just a lot of work, and it is teaching me a lot about project
 management

VanceS 's avatar hugs, bows etc

DennisOl: The grant involves testing foreign language speaking
 proficiency.

ClaireB: I have meetings with the faculty, and they all agree to things,
and then they come later to my office and say that they really didn't
 agree

 DennisOl: I can believe it!

ClaireB: so now i am actually having secret ballots

ClaireB: some people in the group feel dominated by others and don't feel
 free to speak up

DennisOl: Ah, the challenges of project management!

ClaireB: i almost feel like a shrink in dealing with these people

 VanceS: start a ning

DennisOl: Yes, I'm sure the personal dynamics are a big challenge.

ClaireB: the technical issues of the software are easy compared to the
 personal stuff

 DennisOl: Amazing!

ClaireB: i have looked at ning; is it anonymous?

ClaireB: i tried a google group, but they can't manage it

DennisOl: Is the problem time, technology skills, or something else?

ClaireB: i honestly feel that esl folks are easier to get along with

 DennisOl: I can believe it!

ClaireB: the main problem right now seems to be managing people's egos

 DennisOl: Incredible!

ClaireB: none of them are esl folks

ClaireB: vance, why do you suggest nin?

 ClaireB: ning

DennisOl: Is the group, as a whole, computer-accepting?

VanceS: i've been meaning to try it

 VanceS: I don't know

VanceS: I was thinking to start one with the multilit group

VanceS: but it wouldn't have worked I dont think

ClaireB: if you know even a word of spanish, you will love this movie:
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngRq82c8Baw

 VanceS: needs a real network

DennisOl: Claire: The YouTube is funny!

VanceS: i'm setting up webcasting with my other brain

 DennisOl: I can believe it!

DennisOl: I look forward to "The MultiLit Show."

VanceS: i had to uninstall virtual audio cables

 VanceS: need to reinstall them

DennisOl: Is it time-consuming to do that?

 VanceS: not too

VanceS: just have to find the source

DennisOl: I'm hoping to be in the next Webcast Academy class, and I want
to learn how to webcast on both a Mac and a PC.

 SimonGst4 joined the room.

 DennisOl: Welcome back, Simon!

 SimonGst4: Hi,

 VanceS: hey simon

 VanceS: welcome

 BeyzaY: my pleasure

BeyzaY: busy adapting myself to task based stuff

 BeyzaY: and checking portfolios

 DennisOl: Busy!

DennisOl: What kinds of task-based stuff?

VanceS: beyza is new tech specialist at her school

DennisOl: Congratulations, Beyza! I had no idea! That's wonderful!

VanceS: simon thanks for your postings

VanceS: will respond to your latest after webcasting

SimonGst4: Yes, i had trouble keeping up, i'm also on pp104

DennisOl: Here's a virtual rose for you, Beyza:

 DennisOl: --------<--@

 SimonGst4: Yes she says Hi,

VanceS: what's going on in that one?

DennisOl: I had that course, Simon, a couple of years ago: a very good
 experience.

 SimonGst4: grammar and vocab online

 DennisOl: When did it begin?

 SimonGst4: sept 10th

DennisOl: Is Teresa working with Dafne in the course?

 RitaZ joined the room.

SimonGst4: Yes they make a good team

DennisOl: Ah, so you're on the home stretch for the course, then.

 BeyzaY: sorry I was disconnected

 RitaZ: hi, Beyza

BeyzaY: the uni I work for changed the way language is taught

 DennisOl: How so, Beyza?

BeyzaY: they just give teachers the objectives in common european framewok

 RitaZ listens

 BeyzaY: in weekly palnners

DennisOl: Simon: Dafne and Teresa are a wonderful team, in my view.

BeyzaY: and the teacher is free to do anything to cover the objectives

 DennisOl: Ah, very interesting.

VanceS: i wish we had more windows into each otehr's courses

RitaZ: are you asked to follow a coursebook, Beyza?

 DennisOl: I do, too, Vance.

BeyzaY: yes there's a specific cb but

 BeyzaY: u can ommit parts

 BeyzaY: and use extra materials

SimonGst4: yes they're generous with their knowledge

 AiGst5 joined the room.

BeyzaY: as many extra materials as you can

DennisOl: So it's a functional syllabus?

 BeyzaY: yes

RitaZ: well...., here we are given the same freedom, by teachers follow
the bk step by step, easier :-(

DennisOl: Yes, Simon, I can certainly believe that.

 RitaZ: but teachers...

DennisOl: "Teaching by recipe." Right, Rita?

 RitaZ: yeah..., no efforts

 ClaireB: hi guys, i'm baaack

RitaZ: the salary is the same..., they say....

VanceS: by the way, almost raedy with the teaser

DennisOl: And usually with very poor results on the part of the students,
 no?

 DennisOl: WB, Claire.

 AiGst5 left the room.

 RitaZ: great, Vance!

follow those patterns..., and our stds sit for Cambridge exams with good
 results. Hence my stuoid preaching...:-(

DennisOl: Rita, check out the YouTube. It's really funny.

VanceS: but not right now, setting up a stream

 DennisOl: Totally understood, Rita.

 SimonGst4: Hi, Claire,

 DennisOl: However, you don't just 'follow recipes' or 'teach to the book';
I know that about your teaching.

ClaireB: for the benefit of anyone who can use it, here is my three rivers
 tesol presentation from yesterday:
 http://www.edvista.com/claire/pres/socialnet.html

ClaireB: it is called "welcome to web 2"

DennisOl: You address all the required points, but you go beyond them and
 add communicative elements, Rita.

ClaireB: no one in the audience had ever heard of web 2

 RitaZ: THIS VIDEO IS GREAT!!!

 RitaZ: LOL LOL LOL

 DennisOl: Isn't it, Rita? ROTFL!

 ThomasLev: Thanks, Claire

ClaireB: the video has become very popular with spanish teachers in the
 us -- and their students!

DennisOl: Claire, your social networking materials look fantastic! I look
forward to going through them at my leisure. Many thanks!

RitaZ: I wish I had had it for my pres!!!

SimonGst4: Great course vance I'll get back to reading, my 4 yearold is
scotch taping the dog, good job there's no sound!

ClaireB: i have 2 undergraduate spanish majors working in my lab, and they
 love it

DennisOl: Scotch taping the dog??!!! You should have a video of that,
 Simon!

ThomasLev: it'll pick up some of that shedding hair, Simon!

 RitaZ: thanks, Clari, very much

DennisOl: I can believe that, Claire.

 ClaireB: that is funny, simon!

SimonGst4: What me pulling my hair out??

VanceS: sound coming right up simon

 VanceS: stay tuned

ClaireB: no, the dog. how is he/she reacting?

 ThomasLev: duct tape works better

 ClaireB: har har tom

DennisOl: All these images of pulling out hair!!! (particularly amusing to
 someone like me, who's bald)

RitaZ: where are you looking at these images....?

 DennisOl: In my head!

 RitaZ: ??

 RitaZ: (missed that)

ThomasLev: maybe the kid wants to put a saddle on the dog

SimonGst4: Vance, I'll stay tuned, bye

 DennisOl: I'm imagining Simon's child scotch-taping the dog . . . and then
using duct tape on the dog. That's where I see the images: in my
 imagination.

 ClaireB: bye simon

SimonGst4 left the room (signed off).

 DennisOl: Take care, Simon.

ClaireB: imagination is a great thing, isn't it?

 DennisOl: It is indeed!

BeyzaY left the room (signed off).

RitaZ: life has more imagination than us..., Clari :-))

DennisOl: What would we ever do without the wonderful power of
 imagination?

ClaireB: vance, are you setting up something that we can or should watch?

DennisOl: Everything would be grey and dull without it!

ClaireB: yes rita, you are right

RitaZ: things that happen daily are really unpredictable, for the better
 and for the worse...

 DennisOl: Right, Rita.

 BeyzaY joined the room.

ClaireB: in some ways, it is good that we don't know what will happen!

 RitaZ: serendipity is good...:-)

 ClaireB: welcome back, beyza!

 BeyzaY left the room.

 RitaZ: true, Clari

 BeyzaY joined the room.

BeyzaY: my modem drives me crazy

ClaireB: sorry about that, beyza, but don't worry; we understand

can participate in Vance's multiliteracy webcast. I might also join in on
Skype (though last week I had to disconnect to make room for others to

orchestra, too many things to bear in mind

NinaTL: Thanks, Tom, I know I'm not hearing things
